Nurture Their Dreams

EDUCATION

One of the best ways to build local communities is to educate the children. We believe education, more than anything else, strengthens human capacity and helps people to take control of their lives and break poverty's vicious grip. Children living in remote areas of the Tibetan Plateau have no means of transportation and must walk long distances in a harsh, high altitude environment to attend school. One of the poorest areas of the world, they also have no money to pay for a state education.

Gar Relief encourages nomadic families to send their children to school to receive a basic primary education, which is vital to their future self-sufficiency.

For 6 years, Gar Relief has been continually supporting Tajuk Elementary School and alumni who have progressed to further studies in Nangchen.

In 2019, the local issued a new regulation mandating that all elementary school-aged children living in Tajuk must attend a government-run school, the closest of which is located in Dora, a nearby village.

In response to this regulation, Gar Relief has shifted our educational focus to support secondary school-aged children from Tajuk to attend secondary school in Nangchen.

These students are former Tajuk elementary students who are now aged 10 to 16 mainly and enrolled in Grade 4 through high school.

Nangchen is about 2 hours away by car from Tajuk, and students must find boarding in the area to continue their studies. In the tradition of nomadic Tibetan families, children help their families with work that brings the family an income. Their having to attend school at such a long distance away puts a financial strain on families. Not only do parents have to find funds to pay their children’s room and board, but they are also short of one worker at home, which puts a dent on their productivity.

Gar Relief provides funding to help cover board and daily living expenses for these students in Nangchen, which helps ease the strain on families and ensures students continue to attend school.

Gar Relief education fund is 100% channeled to support students for this purpose.
